When I originally created Open Access Helper for iOS and iPadOS it did the best job it could, considering the limitations of the mobile operating system. With iOS 15 Apple now gives developers the power to build Safari Extensions, which work like they would on the desktop.
I am very excited to let you know that I have just released an App that makes use of the new type of extension. What does that mean for you? If you visit a publisher website and the article is available in Open Access, it will show a badge in the top right of the screen, which you can click to access the OA version.
If you are running iOS 15, I’d suggest you’ll give it a try.

What you need to know:
Some features of the original app, will not be found in the new app. Most notably this includes the Bookmark Feature / Zotero Bookmarks, but it got used very little.
What to do, if the extension does not work right away?
Make sure the extension in enabled in Safari Settings. Go to the Settings App and select Safari. Tap Extensions and ensure Open Access Helper Web was enabled. At the bottom of the screen tap “Other Websites” and set to “Allow”.
The new app also lets you set your settings in the Safari Extensions, rather than the app.
